Hydrogen Production Capacity
Installed and operating hydrogen production capacity by process, subprocess and end-use.
Global hydrogen production capacity is dominated by SMR and by-product routes serving refining and ammonia. Electrolysis remains a rounding error in installed capacity even as announcements accelerate.
Utilisation gaps between installed capacity and actual output are large — plan for realistic capacity factors (60–85%) rather than nameplate, especially on hybrid renewable-electrolyser plants.
Reforming still owns the incumbency: any clean project must beat SMR + CCS on delivered cost, not just plant-gate LCOH.
Retrofit-first plays (CCS on existing SMR, e-methanol at chemical clusters) will out-deploy greenfield green plants over the next 3–5 years.
